American national Tony Cochran, who lives in Camden, is accused of winning the confidence of a woman with bipolar disorder before stealing an iPhone, iPad and Tesco credit card from her, a crown court heard on Monday.

Within the space of two minutes on March 1 last year Cochran used the credit card five times at a cash point to try and withdraw £1,490 and was successful in taking out £200 and £100, the jury heard.

The 29-year-old first met the woman from Hertfordshire, who grew up in Hampstead, after advertising on a support network called The Icarus Project as “a psychoanalyst in America”.

She agreed to pay him £1,980 for telephone counselling and quickly developed a close relationship with Cochran, telling the court she had become “quite dependent on him”.

Barrister Martin Hooper, prosecuting, said: “She was desperate. She was embroiled in social services proceedings over her daughter. We say in these circumstances she was vulnerable and open to abuse and manipulation by the defendant.”

The jury heard in the second week of February 2015 Cochran told the woman he loved her and that he needed to leave the USA before asking her to pay his airfare.

She did not have the money and applied for a Tesco credit card. When it did not arrive in time she used an overdraft to pay for the ticket, the prosecution said.

The defendant arrived in the UK and stayed at her Hertfordshire flat for three days in the last week of February during which time he was “controlling and manipulative,” the prosecution said.

On the morning of March 1 Cochran left the flat and the woman later discovered her iPad, iPhone, some money from her purse, the Tesco credit card and a letter containing the PIN number were gone, the jury heard.

Later that day she received a call from Tesco to say the card had been used in a number of transactions.

“We say that the pattern of use makes it clear that here was a man who was trying to get as much use out of the credit card as quickly as possible before it was realised by the bank,” said the prosecutor.

When Cochran was arrested he claimed the woman had sexually assaulted him and alleged there was a second contract between the pair for £1,790 of “live-in” counselling services which was unpaid.

The jury heard his defence relies on an email allegedly sent by the woman on the morning of March 1, which said: “I’m sorry about last night, I can be a bit violent sometimes. Please take this Tesco card pin 6605 and spend a little for yourself.”

But the prosecution say the woman was asleep in bed at the time and Cochran had access to her iPhone.

He is accused of blackmailing her as he allegedly threatened to report the woman to PayPal and police if she did not pay the debt.

Cochran, of Brunswick Mansions, Handel Street, Bloomsbury, is charged with three counts of theft, three of attempted theft, five of fraud and one count of blackmail.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and is representing himself in the trial at St Albans Crown Court.

The case continues.

VICTIM: ‘I WAS VERY CHARMED AND ADMIRED HIM’

The woman at the centre of the case told the jury she was “very charmed” by Tony Cochran and was “eager to please him”.

She said Cochran told her he had a “masters qualification in psychosocial studies from Birkbeck university” in London but added “I’m not sure if this is the case”.

She told the jury: “I really admired him as an educated person and an anti-capitalist” before later asserting during a tense cross examination “I suppose he could be a non-capitalist and a criminal hand-in-hand”.

Describing their counselling sessions, she said: “The approach to what he called radical existential psychoanalysis is that he gives you a lot of personal information about himself to aid the relationship between himself and the client.”

She continued: “What I’m trying to say is that what was being built-up was far more than a professional relationship.”

On arrest Cochran claimed the woman had sexually assaulted him on three occasions before he left her flat.

Visibly angered, she strenuously denied the allegations saying: “I was questioned by police about this in December last year, I was never charged. No this did not happen.”

The vulnerable victim spoke out after American national Tony Cochran, described in court as “cunning and deceitful”, was found guilty of fraud, theft and blackmail by a jury on Friday.

The self-styled psychoanalyst from Camden, who is the civil partner of the late film director Ken Russell’s son, had won the vulnerable woman’s confidence by carrying out sessions of “radical existential psychoanalysis” via telephone from the United States, charging £1,980.

The jury heard he later moved into her Hertfordshire home to perform a “Laingian intervention” inspired by an experiment by Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing in which therapists live with mentally ill patients.

Within days Cochran stole the woman’s Tesco credit card and PIN number and attempted to withdraw £1,490 in just two minutes at a cash point on March 1 last year.

He later sent emails to try and blackmail her out of another £1,790.

Following the verdict at St Albans Crown Court, the victim told the Ham&High: “My family and I are keen that he never be able to commit crime again.”

The jury heard that after the victim went to police Cochran made allegations that she had sexually assaulted him on three occasions and she was put through the ordeal of being cross examined during trial.

During one lurid account, forcefully denied by the victim, Cochran described how he had allegedly found her lying next to a dead fish and masturbating in her hallway, before rubbing herself against him.

Cochran, who represented himself in court, was found guilty of three counts of theft, three of attempted theft, five of fraud and one of blackmail.

Judge John Plumstead, who will sentence Cochran on September 2, said he believed the 29-year-old may have a “narcissistic personality disorder” and ordered psychiatric assessments.

He said: “His degree seems to have been a pretty generalist one, he’s talked himself into thinking that by reading Jean Paul Sartre and Heidegger he can form a basis to give therapy to others. That’s delusional.”

The judge continued: “This man could have very substantially reduced the trouble he was in if he’d had the ability to face up to it.

“If he’d said ‘I’m a bit of a freak, I’m not very happy in my life, I wish I hadn’t done this’, I would have been looking at ways to be sympathetic. I’m afraid I’m not.”

The woman has now appealed for anyone who may have concerns about Cochran to contact police.

Cochran, of of Brunswick Mansions, Handel Street, Bloomsbury, is facing a prison term unless the judge rules he should be hospitalised under a mental health order.

‘MESSAGE FROM A TERRORIST YOU TUBE RANT

The Ham&High can now reveal a YouTube video of Tony Cochran preaching anti-capitalist theories in Camden Lock and calling for the death of former prime minister David Cameron is published online.

Cochran can be seen in the bizarre clip called ‘Message from a Terrorist’ shouting through a megaphone at the passing crowds about destroying the financial power of the City of London and Wall Street.

He says: “If you want to talk about terrorism, yes I’m a terrorist, but I’m a terrorist against the terrorists.

“So I say we should kill the bankers and execute them all in the City, first one Mark Carney (governor of the Bank of England) and then perhaps the head of David Cameron should go rolling after that.”

He goes on: “We’ve got to attack the people at the top. There’s a list of the people, 80 people who own as much wealth as half the world’s population. This is the hit list. If you wanna kill somebody kill one of those people.”

It has been viewed more than 4,500 times.

During his trial Cochran told the jury he worked in the trade union movement in America.

The court also heard that he had been involved with the protest group Occupy Wall Street in New York.

CONVICTED MAN RAISED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ONLINE

The Ham&High’s investigation has shown that self-styled psychoanalyst Tony Cochran has a number of crowdfunding accounts on the website IndieGoGo which have raised thousands of dollars.

Our reporter found five web pages on the fundraising site, all now closed, in the name of Tony Cochran of Camden, some featuring a picture of Cochran.

The pages have raised the following amounts; Africa Help - Liberia $3,095, Help Africa - Liberia $2,156, Help Africa £100, Medical Fund $440, Medical and Housing Costs - Liberia $900.

The Ham&High could find no charities of these names.

Cochran’s civil partner, the artist Alex Verney-Elliott, also started a ‘Political Dissident Campaign Fund for Tony Robert Cochran’ on IndieGoGo, which has raised $607.

Mr Verney-Elliott, son of the late film director Ken Russell - whose movie hits include Women In Love staring former Hampstead MP and Oscar winner Glenda Jackson, confirmed he set up the page when contacted by the Ham&High.

It asks for donations to assist with Cochran’s “housing, healthcare and food costs” and says Cochran “has been held in the UK on police bail without charge for dubious political and legal reasons” that relate to his philosophical work, but mentions nothing of the theft, fraud and blackmail charges.

During the trial, the victim told the jury that Cochran sometimes uses a second name of Eilif Verney-Elliott, which he denied.

When the Ham&High went online we found four accounts in the name of Eilif Verney-Elliot showing Cochran’s photograph, including a member page on The Guardian website.

Tony Cochran, 29, of Handel Street, Camden, was sentenced for fraud, theft and blackmail at St Alban’s Crown Court on Friday.

The American national was found guilty of manipulating a vulnerable woman and moving into her house to carry out “radical existential psychoanalysis”.

He then stole her credit card and attempted to withdraw £1,490 in two minutes at a cash point.

The victim, who grew up in Hampstead and was described as “vulnerable and open to abuse” by the prosecution, had already paid the self-styled psychoanalyst £1,980 for telephone counselling sessions from the States.

She told the court during trial she was “very charmed” by Cochran and was “eager to please” him.

“What was being built up was far more than a professional relationship,” she said.

But Cochran broke her trust and stole her credit card and PIN before leaving her Hertfordshire home on March 1, 2015, the court heard.

When the victim went to police he tried to blackmail her and concocted a story accusing the woman of sexually assaulting him, the jury heard.

She was put through the ordeal of cross-examination about lurid allegations that he had found her masturbating in the hallway of her home next to a dead fish.

Cochran, who is the civil partner of film director Ken Russell’s son, the artist Alexander Verney-Elliott, represented himself during the trial and is likely to face deportation once he has served his prison term.

Judge John Plumstead told Cochran he had no professional qualifications as a psychoanalyst and said he had “deluded” himself into thinking he could give therapy to patients.

Cochran made a show of opening a sealed transcript of his degree qualifications from the witness stand during the trial.

But Judge Plumstead told the jury after the guilty verdicts: “This is plainly a man who got a moderate education. Rogues College in small town Oregon seems to have given him notions of his own capacities that are delusional.

“He’s talked himself into thinking that by reading Jean Paul Sartre and Heidegger he can form a basis to give therapy. That’s delusional.”

The victim said after Cochran’s conviction that she was “relieved that justice has been served” and she hoped he would “never be able to commit crime again”.

The Ham&High revealed after the trial that Cochran had raised thousands of dollars through the crowdfunding website IndieGoGo.

The pages took donations in the name of Africa Help – Liberia, Help Africa – Liberia, and Medical and Housing Costs – Liberia, but the Ham&High could find no such charities.

WILL TONY COCHRAN BE DEPORTED AFTER SERVING HIS SENTENCE?

The Home Office has refused to comment on whether Tony Cochran will be deported from the UK when he has served his prison sentence – saying only “we do not routinely comment on individual cases”.

But a spokesman told the Ham&High: “Foreign nationals who abuse our hospitality by committing crimes in the UK should be in no doubt of our determination to deport them.

“Since 2010, we have radically reformed the deportation process and removed nearly 32,000 foreign criminals from the UK.

“We have toughened the law by cutting the number of grounds on which criminals can appeal deportation and are deporting more people before the end of their sentences.”

According to Home Office figures 5,810 foreign national offenders were removed from the UK in 2015-16, the highest number ever.
